BIG CHANNEL-CHIANAN IRRIGATION LANDSCAPE THEATER |TAINAN

Big Channel

Big Channel Chianan Irrigation Landscape Theater

The Longtian chacha Culture Heritage Area is located in the Fanzitian train station of the Japanese era, next to the modern-day Longtian train station. Geographically, it is located in proximity to the Wusanto Reservoir, with other buildings of the Cultural Heritage Area belonging to the Taiwan Salt, Taiwan Sugar, and Taiwan Railways companies, all originally being part of the history of Chianan Irrigation Waterway. Brightext planned the exhibition using the two main buildings in the Heritage Area, the Southern and Northern Warehouses as the Big Channel Chianan Irrigation Landscape Theater, to show visitors how the Chianan Plain itself has been transformed into a platform for learning and discourse. The word “Channel” represents two different meanings: the first is the 16,000 kilometers of irrigation system that intersects and connects Chianan Plain, and the second is Big Channel wishes to act as a conduit for images, sounds, and knowledge to be shared.

Historical Sites X Environmental Values The old three trees that are part of the original historical site at the Northern and Southern Warehouses were incorporated into the exhibition. The paper mulberry tree also became a key visual element of the general exhibition space, combined with large pieces of glass that provide an abundance of natural lighting. Another reason that this was considered an important section was that the sunlight and shadows of the paper mulberry tree change over time and season, giving the exhibition an even more organic shape. The main hall of the Northern Warehouse also includes both indoor and outdoor spaces, making it the perfect location to educate visitors about the environmental importance of the Chianan Irrigation Waterway.

Northern Warehouse

STEAM Inter-disciplinary space + Immersive Theater

The Chianan Irrigation Waterway project, built by a collaborative effort, also embodies the expertise of various disciplines. Using the principles of STEAM, we incorporated a series of inter-disciplinary themes, including agriculture, hydraulics, iconology, mechanical engineering, and art into the exhibition. By bringing together designers and science teachers, we have also developed a range of site-specific courses that continue to inject creative energy into the space.

The curatorial team at Brightest cooperated with the Ito family of Kanazawa, Japan, and the Tainan Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage for over two years to study and research Satoshi Ito’s Wax Resist Dyeing Silk Tapestry "The Construction Work of Chianan Irrigation System.

Ito’s artwork was used as a creative foundation for a park named after him in the exhibit, with a documentary also created through interviews with his decedents in Kanazawa, Japan. "Satoshi Ito Park" was an exhibition space designed to be both "interactive" and "theater-like", which allowed for two different usages. Through four-sided immersive projections in the exhibition space and a day-night cycle, the space became a place for visitors to explore the various facets of the Chianan Irrigation Waterway’s construction process originally depicted in Ito’s artwork. As a theater, audiences were allowed to experience the perspectives of artist Satoshi Ito and lead engineer Yoichi Hatta’s perspectives of the construction project. A panoramic 3D animation also allows visitors to view how the Chianan Irrigation System altered the landscape of the Chianan Plains, giving them the chance to view the Plains before, during, and after the construction.

Southern Warehouse

SOUNDSCAPE Audio Scene Creation + Interactive Playground

The Southern Warehouse is a playground created around the theme of the Chianan Irrigation Waterway, including interactive exhibits that cover the irrigation, agriculture, and culture. These exhibits invite the audience to experience the impact of the Chianan Irrigation Waterway with their own bodies. Among them, "Channel Pachinko" is a supersized pinball machine that combines mechanical power, lighting performances, metal slides, and electronic music, with visual motifs inspired by the Irrigation System itself and a parade float common in Taiwan's religious festivities. "Farmland Hopscotch" is another interactive exhibit that renders the landscape of the Chianan Plain with an 8-bit art style ground projection, letting visitors feel and see a connection between the four altering seasons and the irrigation functions the Waterway provides through a jumping grid game. Finally, the "Chianan Sounds" interactive exhibit deconstructs the sounds of the Chianan Irrigation Waterway and surrounding areas. These include the sounds of railways, local ecology, food, festivals, etc.; invite the audience to freely choose, combine, mix, and co-create sounds of the modern Chianan Plains.

Publicity × Branding ×Inter-disciplinary

The Big Channel Chianan Irrigation Landscape Theater not only seeks to provide an interactive educational space for adults and children alike but also aims to become an inter-disciplinary platform for sustainability, technology, and the humanities. In the process of connecting the public, the branding of the Chianan Irrigation Waterway Project and the surrounding area are also elevated while creating additional knowledge and lexicon in the common consciousness as the continued discourse of one of Taiwan’s most important public construction projects.
